Vermouth is an aromatized fortified wine flavored with herbs and spices. Produced in the 18th century in Turin, Italy, Vermouth was used for medicinal purposes. It later became a fashionable apéritif, then an essential ingredient for cocktails.
Vermouth is made in two styles: 1) dry vermouth (white), which is used to make martinis, and 2) sweet vermouth (red) – used in Manhattans and negronis. They’re both still enjoyed as an apéritif. Dry vermouths are light-bodied and low in tannins. Sweet vermouths are medium-bodied with some tannins.
