Italian Marsala wines use Grillo and Catarratto Bianco grapes grown on the Mediterranean island of Sicily. Like Ports and Madeiras, Marsala is a fortified, high alcohol (17%) red wine and Versasi Marsalas are typical of the region with a Denominazione Origine Controllata (DOC) rating. Versasi Marsalas are aged one year in oak and today are used most often as cooking wines in scrumptious, rich Italian sauces and dishes including the dish it made famous, pollo Marsala.
